The installation that you see in the photos here is a site specific one created by Wolfgang Stiller. For this, thick wooden pieces were used as the base. The name of this creation is Matchstick Men. The faces are horrific and charred. The shapes were created using the Head Molds that the artist had in his studio. It looks like they have emerged from the wood after the match stick was burn. It was made to appear so. What the sculpture is telling us is for us to interpret. But one thing is for sure, the matches have sort of unsettling resemblance to death and mortality.
According to Stiller, the installation is similar to a battlefield or a playground. You might feel someone played around with these matches and then dropped them. The heads resemble Chinese people. Stiller’s action might lead us to think that he is criticizing the Chinese govt. But he thinks that he has used this as metaphor for western people as well.
