In the beginning of 19th century,  Louis-Philippe Messelier settled in Shanghai and left France for good.

In Shanghai he became a photojournalist for the French Journal of Shanghai. There he took photographs of lavishing and eccentric street performances that no one else have ever witnessed before in the media of course. He also has the privilege of capturing the rapid modernization of China from 1920s and 1930s.
